Choosing window treatments can be a difficult task. Here are some tips on what to think about when deciding how to dress your windows.

  1. First of all, assess the situation. Are you trying to highlight your window, or do you want it to blend into the background of the room? Naturally, if you want to highlight your windows, use a contrasting fabric or finish from your wall color. This will accentuate the window, and make it a focal point in the room. Full-length drapery adds drama and elegance to a room, whereas wooden shutters or bamboo blinds are a more clean-line, contemporary look. If you want to detract from the window, use a fabric or other finish that is similar to your wall color.

  2. For smaller windows or windows where you are looking for complete privacy at all times, a Roman shade is a good option. This is a great alternative for those windows with a less-than-flattering view (ie your neighbour's brick wall). Roman shades allow you to pick a fabric that co-ordinates with the furniture in the room, so everything ties together! If you are using Roman shades, be sure to beef-up the window casings to really show them off, as the Roman shade will sit inside the casing. Roman shades are great for any style of room, because they can look traditional or contemporary, depending on the fabric you use and the style of pleating in the shade.

  3. If you are looking to visually enlarge a window or add height to a room, full length curtain panels with sheers are a great way to do this. The sheer can act as a means to mask the actual size of the window and provide visual privacy, while the side panels add height and drama. Be sure to use a curtain rod that extends well past the actual window size to visually expand the size of the window, and allow as much natural light in as possible.

Happy window shopping!

The husband was in big trouble when he forgot his wedding anniversary. His wife told him - "Tomorrow there had better be something in the driveway for me that can go from zero to 200 in 2 seconds flat.
The next morning the wife found a small package in the driveway. She opened it and found a brand new bathroom scale. Funeral arrangements for the husband have been set for Saturday!
