The Rainbow Warrior Calls Anadarko Oil – Texas
This is a great video from the Rainbow Warrior – in a call to Anadarko in Texas – and while it is respectful – there is no mistaking the strong message. New Zealand said no to nuclear pollution years ago and now people – New Zealanders and global citizens need to stand up and say no again to deep sea oil drilling in this pristine area of the sub-Antarctic.
The lessons of the massive oil spill in the Gulf a couple of years ago are all to clear. In the aftermath of that massive disaster birds and dolphins are apparently still getting sick in the Gulf. However BP would like us to believe that all is well. They are doing some clever commercials showing local business people and happy tourists enjoying a sparkling summer while a spokesman chats about BP’s on-going caring assistance and commitment to the Gulf. Not a worry in the world! Well – until the next oil spill – if one occurs.
Here is the e-mail from The Rainbow Warrior:
“As we sailed out of Wellington through the Cook Strait on the Rainbow Warrior a few days ago, all of a sudden we were met by hundreds of dolphins. And they kept arriving until we were completely surrounded. I was totally blown away and even the most experienced seafarers among us were amazed.
And it felt significant because at the time we were very close to the Pegasus Basin where Texan oil company Anadarko wants to carry out high risk deep sea oil drilling.
We had just been to the Auckland Islands to draw people’s attention to what is at stake if we allow deep sea oil drilling to proceed and that was a profound experience. But it felt almost as if this enormous pod of dolphins had then arrived to remind us that in fact all around New Zealand we have an astonishingly rich ecology that is too precious to risk.
So, on the bridge of the Rainbow Warrior we made a pledge to resist, with every peaceful means available to us, the threat of deep sea oil.
And then we called Anadarko in Texas to tell them exactly that”.
